Maxell has been conducting field tests*1 of power supply modules incorporating its all-solid-state batteries in manufacturing equipment at customers’ factories since 2024, with the aim of reducing the workload associated with battery replacement at production sites. The tests confirmed stable backup performance under actual manufacturing conditions, and customers highly valued the modules for their ability to improve equipment maintainability. Based on these results, Maxell developed four models of the All-Solid-State Battery Backup Module.
In industrial equipment for factory automation (FA), such as industrial robots and programmable logic controllers (PLC), non-rechargeable primary batteries, including lithium thionyl chloride batteries (ER batteries) and lithium manganese dioxide batteries (CR batteries) are commonly used as backup power sources for memory and real-time clocks (RTC) during power outages.
However, primary batteries require periodic replacement, and the equipment downtime associated with battery replacement work can reduce the operating efficiency of production lines. In addition, depending on the operating environment, primary batteries may reach the end of their service life earlier than expected. As a result, regular checks of battery capacity and replacement timing are required, placing a burden on maintenance and servicing operations. For these reasons, there has been a growing need to improve maintainability.
The module is available with output voltages corresponding to those of ER batteries (3.6 V) and CR batteries (3.0 V), which are widely used as backup power sources. Two battery capacity options are available for each voltage type, offering a lineup of four models that can be selected according to the application. The all-solid-state battery incorporated into the module has an expected service life of more than 10 years*2. As a result, the module is expected to reduce the labor associated with primary battery replacement and the risk of downtime caused by unexpected battery depletion. In addition, the module can operate at temperatures of up to 85°C.
Maxell will exhibit the module at Measurement & Control Show NEXT 2026 (October 21-23, 2026; Grand Cube Osaka, Japan), and Factory Innovation Week NAGOYA (November 25-27, 2026; Aichi Sky Expo, Japan).
Under its corporate byline, “Micro batteries. Maximum impact.”, Maxell embodies the belief that small batteries can create great value. Moving forward, leveraging four pillars of high reliability, high heat resistance, high power output, and large capacity, Maxell aims to commercialize batteries that can be used in the fields where conventional batteries have not been suitable, and contribute to the resolution of social challenges and the realization of a sustainable society.
