To date, most people do not have a clear understanding of the potential risks in today’s technologically advanced world. For that very reason it is essential to clarify and explain one of the terms associated with fraud: <b>Deepfakes</b>. This phenomenon is an example of a possible threat to peoples’ digital identities.</p>
<p>What is “deepfake”?</p>
<p>Deepfakes are fake videos, photos and in a few cases even fake audios produced by an artificial intelligence where peoples’ faces, actions or voices are adjusted in a certain way. Often the line between reality and fakeness is therefore blurred leaving plenty of room for any kind of manipulation and fraud. Especially with the intent to deceive and defame their victims, deepfakes are turning into dangerous cyber weapons. Those victims include not only <a href="https://youtu.be/6yw9YszJEmA/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" data-wpel-link="external">celebrities</a>, or politicians but increasingly also private people.</p>
<p>
With technology and software evolving constantly as well, so is the creation of such <b>deepfakes </b>with the extent of their spreading out of reach. Not only the quality of the forged videos or photos is getting better and more real over time but also the ease to create deepfakes with only limited image material available.</p>
<p>This <b>deepfake video</b> for instance was created by one of our employees with a free online tool using only one image. Can you recognize the video as a deepfake video? No? In a later paragraph, we’ll tell you how to do in the future.</p>
<p>Deepfake: meaning and origin</p>
<p>The term “deepfake” resulted from merging the words “Deep Learning” and “Fake” highlighting the usage of machine learning methods to create fakes almost autonomously. Due to their potential constructive content, there has been recent effort for change in the industry and in politics. The goal is to limit the usage of such faking software as well as to punish any kind of unauthorized creation of “face swapping” or “body-puppetry”. Not only the concern for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJfDpGO6shI/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" data-wpel-link="external"><b>data protection</b></a> moves regulators to create new laws but also the threat to legal and democratic processes outside of the online world. In fact, the use of such deepfakes can be found in various fields of life: politics, arts and especially pornography, where users try to misrepresent certain people using their faces, voices or bodies on display to achieve criminal acts. Would you have known, that with 96 %, deepfakes are most prevalent in the porn industry?</p>
<p>Celebrity deepfakes and how to create a deepfake in general</p>
<p>The first deepfakes appeared online back in 2017 on the platform Reddit when a user created fakes showing celebrities’ faces on the actors in adult videos. Those deepfakes went viral along with the shared computer code to produce such manipulated videos or images. This led to an explosion of fake content all over social media with celebrities primarily being the initial targets. One of the most famous deepfakes out there is a video called “Synthetizing Obama” where Barack Obama seemingly calls his presidential opponent Donald Trump “<i>a total and complete dipshit</i>”.</p>

<div class="pb-text">German biometrics company BioID today announced its engagement in FAKE-ID, a project on deepfake detection funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). This work on deepfakes is part of the Federal Government’s framework programme Research for Civil Security and the BMBF funding call on artificial intelligence in security research. It is set to take place from May 2021 until April 2024 in association with multiple partners, amongst them Bundesdruckerei GmbH and Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institute from Berlin, Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg as well as Berlin Institute for Safety and Security Research (FÖPS Berlin) at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. BioID contributes its anti-spoofing technologies and expertise in the field of biometrics to this deepfake project.</p>
<p>The main goal of the FAKE-ID consortium is to develop a deepfake detection software with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). For this, the technical basics of deepfakes as well as the procedures behind their creation are examined. Based on the outcome, algorithms will be developed to expose manipulated photos and videos. The deepfake detectors are designed to support decisions in court, remote identity verification processes, etc. In addition, legal and socio-ethical research on the use of AI for the detection of deepfakes is undertaken. In the context of technology assessment, the project consortium gives particular consideration to the impact of the detection software on the fundamental rights of individuals as well as the implications for society.</p>
<p><b>What is a Deepfake?</b></p>
<p>The term “Deepfake” results from merging the words “Deep Learning” and “Fake”, highlighting the usage of machine learning methods to create manipulated photo, video and audio material almost autonomously. Over the years the quality and quantity of deepfakes has increased immensely with the creation process becoming ever easier. If forged professionally, the identification of a deepfake is almost impossible for the bare eye. Therefore, the potential destructive nature poses a threat for society, politics and other areas of life.</p>
<p>As a countermeasure, forensic and biometric methods are required to reveal deepfakes and mitigate their potential misuse. The BMBF funded project was brought into life to increase trust levels and have effective mechanisms against fake news and fraudsters at hand.</p>
<p>From a practical point of view, fraud prevention through deepfake detection is highly relevant. Thus, the FAKE-ID project’s associated partners, among them Deutsche Post and the Federal Criminal Police Office Berlin, are highly interested in the conducted research.</p>
<p><b>Exposing Deepfake Presentation Attacks via Liveness Detection</b></p>
<p>BioID has developed software that can distinguish live persons from fakes to secure their customers’ identity verification and authentication processes. Through capturing the motion on two face images and combining this with artificial intelligence, BioID’s liveness detection can therefore identify deepfake presentation attacks. The next step and the ongoing subject of the consortium’s research is the detection of manipulation within the photo and video material directly.</p>
<p>“Deepfakes are created with machine learning methods that are similar to certain parts of our liveness detection solution. The aim is to combine our two decades of experience in biometrics with the latest artificial intelligence to stay ahead of impostors and defy deepfakes in any scenario.”, says Dr. Robert Frischholz, BioID CTO.</p></div>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="pb-text">Biometrics-as-a-Service provider BioID GmbH today announced the official PAD evaluation report by TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH (TÜViT) was issued. BioID <a href="https://www.bioid.com/liveness-detection/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" data-wpel-link="external">Liveness Detection</a> was successfully audited both on level A and level B attacks.</p>
<p>The FIDO accredited biometric laboratory TÜViT tested against criteria based on <a href="https://fidoalliance.org/specs/biometric/requirements/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" data-wpel-link="external">FIDO Biometric Certification Requirements</a> v1.1 (FIDO1.1) and <a href="https://www.iso.org/standard/67381.html" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" data-wpel-link="external">ISO/IEC 30107-3:2017</a>. The applied criteria are considered by TÜViT to be stricter than FIDO1.1, so as the test was successful, the FIDO criteria are also regarded as being met.</p>
<p>In 1000 spoofing attempts, various photos, paper masks and moving videos on different displays were used by TÜViT for challenging the anti-spoofing system. In addition, a bona-fide test with live persons, designed for auditing correct live classifications, was performed. The bona-fide test validates that the presentation attack detection mechanism, while being secure, is also appropriate for its intended application. Both tests were passed successfully.<br />
 </p>
<p>ISO/IEC 30107 FOR PAD</p>
<p>ISO/IEC 30107-3 is the international standard for presentation attack detection. It includes methods for performance assessment of PAD mechanisms. It gives guidance on how to report testing results from evaluations of presentation attack detection mechanisms. Also, the ISO standard includes a classification of known attack types. The attack classes can be grouped into level A, B and C or are called level 1, 2 and 3. <p>EUROPE’S FIRST ISSUED FIDO BIOMETRIC CERTIFICATION RELIES ON BIOID PAD</p>
<p>In addition to the independent testing procedure conducted by TÜViT, BioID’s liveness detection has also been validated during a customer’s <a href="https://www.bioid.com/blog/2020/11/fido-certification-ariadnext/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" data-wpel-link="external">FIDO biometric component certification</a> in 2020. This certification is based on the standards ISO 19795 and ISO 30107. The solution including BioID PAD is one of the first in the world that achieved this certification. During the certification process, the accuracy of BioID’s liveness detection was evaluated with hundreds of spoofing attacks carried out using a variety of materials, including photo prints on different media and materials, 3D avatars and video projection. <p>LIVENESS DETECTION FOR ANTI-SPOOFING IN IDENTITY VERIFICATION</p>
<p>BioID Liveness Detection requires only two selfies and ensures they were captured from a live person in real-time. Fakes like photos, videos or masks of various materials are reliably detected to ensure the integrity of a <a href="https://www.bioid.com/kyc-with-biometrics/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" data-wpel-link="external">registration or authentication process</a>. BioID’s Liveness Detection works with any standard RGB camera and does not require special sensors. It is used by customers worldwide in the private and banking sectors as well as by government service providers. BioID’s liveness detection is an integral part of ARIADNEXT’s product IDCheck.io. Only recently, in November 2020, this solution has received one of the first in the world <a href="https://www.ariadnext.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ariadnext-is-proud-to-achieve-the-fido-accreditation-for-the-certification-of-biometric-components.pdf" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external" rel="nofollow">FIDO biometric certifications</a> according to the standards ISO19795 and ISO 30107. In addition to examining facial recognition performance, a thorough <a href="https://www.bioid.com/liveness-detection/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external" rel="nofollow">liveness detection</a> testing was central for the FIDO accreditation. <b>This fraud prevention component is provided by BioID from Germany.</b></p>
<p><b>AMONG THE FIRST SOLUTIONS IN THE WORLD TO RECEIVE FIDO BIOMETRIC CERTIFICATION</b></p>
<p>Two <a href="https://fidoalliance.org/certification/biometric-component-certification/fido-accredited-biometric-laboratories/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external" rel="nofollow">FIDO accredited laboratories</a> were involved in testing and evaluating the biometric components facial matching and liveness detection. The French ELITT, a laboratory specialized in trusted transactions, and LETI ITSEF, a laboratory with IT security focus. These are jointly accredited by FIDO Alliance to carry out biometric tests in accordance with FIDO specifications based on the ISO19795 and <a href="https://www.iso.org/standard/67381.html" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external" rel="nofollow">ISO 30107</a> standards.</p>
<p>The IDCheck.io solution is a reliable and intuitive solution for individuals who want to register for an online service. The accuracy of BioID’s liveness detection was evaluated with hundreds of spoofing attacks carried out using a variety of materials, including photo prints on different media, 3D avatars and video projection.</p>

<p><b>LIVENESS DETECTION FOR ANTI-SPOOFING IN IDENTITY VERIFICATION</b></p>
<p>BioID Liveness Detection requires only two selfies taken during a <a href="https://www.bioid.com/kyc-with-biometrics/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external" rel="nofollow">remote onboarding process</a> like ARIADNEXT’s. The FIDO tested technology ensures they were captured from a live person. Fakes like photos, videos or masks are reliably detected to ensure the integrity of the registration process. BioID’s Liveness Detection works with any standard camera, hence is perfect for end-user applications.</p>

Through the integration of an ICAO-compliance check for biometric photos from German company BioID GmbH, yet another innovative application has been enabled: Photobooth-Deluxe now offers a cost-efficient self-service system for creating biometric ID photos for official documents. </p>
<p>QUALITYCHECK API FOR EMPLOYEE BADGES</p>
<p>Photobooths have long exceeded only being a fun tool for weddings or company events. Numerous companies are now leveraging the possibility to automate employee pictures for their internal profile and badges as well as visa applications. These processes become more efficient through the self-service photobooth as it is available at all times and doesn’t require trained personnel. The high-end hardware is dedicated to creating high quality pictures for ICAO compliance, a standard needed for photos on identity documents.</p>
<p>Before printing the headshot images these are checked thoroughly by the BioID <a href="https://developer.bioid.com/bwsreference/web-api/qualitycheck-web-api" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external" rel="nofollow">QualityCheck API</a>. This API evaluates characteristics like lighting, head rotation, eye distance, as well as the age of the picture. This way it determines, whether or not the image is compliant with the official ICAO standards required for such a passport photo. The API can be tested at the BioID Playground, using the demo “Pic4Pass”. </p>
<p>SERVICE AND SECURITY IN LOCAL CITIZEN OFFICES</p>
<p>Internationally, this photobooth functionality is used in registration offices when citizens apply for driver’s licenses and identity documents. For instance, local city offices in Slovenia use the photobooth for issuing freshly taken passport images on-site. Not only does this cater to a higher level of service for the citizens but it also strengthens security, as it prevents submission of manipulated images.</p>
<p>In Germany, only recently there where experiments of morphed images including two different faces, which were submitted at registration offices and used to issue passports. As a result, facial recognition systems, but also humans, recognize both people in the morphed image on the ID or passport. This may result in a loophole for criminals. One way to prevent this situation, is to ask citizens to take their biometric pictures on-site, or have the passport photo taken and transmitted to the authorized service provider (e.g. passport office) directly.</p>
<p>The financial concept of <a href="https://www.photobooth-deluxe.de/en/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external" rel="nofollow">Photobooth-Deluxe</a> is easy and based on profit-sharing: Starting from 50 ID photos per month, the hardware is provided for free. </p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="pb-text">Also known as presentation attack detection (PAD), <b>liveness detection certification</b> and <b>certified liveness detection</b> solutions have become the hot topic of the whole biometrics industry. In the following, this article will thus explain the most important elements of a liveness detection certification, including PAD evaluations and FIDO certifications as well as their limitations.</p>
<p>Until only 3 years ago, <a href="https://www.bioid.com/liveness-detection/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external" rel="nofollow">liveness detection</a> certification was a non-existent topic in the commercial facial recognition industry. Not only was no term defined publicly if it came to biometric anti-spoofing. Back then, in the absence of comprehensive solutions securing facial recognition against attacks, there was no public discussion on biometric anti-spoofing at all. Consequently, no objective and comparable liveness detection certification or evaluation was available. This has changed only recently.</p>
<p><b>Choosing an Anti-Spoofing Solution</b></p>
<p>When choosing an anti-spoofing solution, the standard process is to asses a vendor’s technology, background, reputation, as well as credibility (e.g. in terms of GDPR). This can be determined through the vendor’s experience in the market and achievements in the research area (i.e. patents). Carrying out performance testing is an option as well. As more and more new players are entering the field, an evaluation like a liveness detection certification becomes an additional eligibility criterion. This can be especially useful for assessing new vendors without a reputable position on the market.</p>
<p>The <b>ISO standard ISO/IEC 30107-3</b> for presentation attack detection was introduced in September 2017. This norm has been incorporated in the official FIDO certification process. Also, it has led to independent laboratories offering PAD evaluations based on this ISO norm. If a certified liveness detection is based on this ISO standard ISO/IEC 30107-3, there is a certain element of comparability between the different evaluations. Still, it is important to take a closer look at the testing protocols and results as various laboratories or test centers differ in how they carry out the performance assessment. This can result in disparity of the informative value of <b>liveness detection certifications</b>. Due to limited test scenarios, results might not be transferable to real-life scenarios. Hence, it may always be recommended to perform individual performance assessment before deciding for an <a href="https://www.bioid.com/liveness-detection/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external" rel="nofollow">anti-spoofing solution</a>.</p>
<p>The following sections are geared at enabling corporates in need for a PAD solution to estimate the informative value of a liveness detection certification.</p>

<p><b>How Liveness Detection Certification Works</b></p>
<p>A <b>biometric vendor</b> trying to offer a certified liveness detection needs to engage with one of the accredited laboratories and provide a software/hardware solution for evaluation. The small number of accredited laboratories to perform a liveness detection certification include e.g. the German TÜV IT, the Swiss Center for Biometrics Research and Testing (Idiap Research Institute) and the French ELITT/Leti CEA. A full list of accredited test centres can be found in the resources list below.</p>
<p>For offering a certified liveness detection, biometric vendors can either choose to perform a FIDO certification or do a mere PAD evaluation. In addition to the PAD performance, a FIDO certification also includes the biometric verification (facial recognition) performance. During both performance tests, biometric anti-spoofing systems are challenged with different presentation attacks such as printed photos, paper masks or videos. If successfully tested according to ISO/IEC 30107-3, the biometric vendor receives a testing report (in the case of a PAD evaluation) or a FIDO certificate (if a full FIDO certification is performed). </p>
<p><b>Which Presentation Attacks are Tested</b></p>
<p>According to <a href="https://fidoalliance.org/specs/biometric/requirements/" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external" rel="nofollow">FIDO Biometrics Requirements</a> published in 06/2019, there are three levels of presentation attack scenarios which can be tested against. These differ mainly in the time, expertise and equipment needed to create the attack (see table 1). Level A includes simple photo printouts, or a photo presented on a smartphone display, whereas level B additionally includes paper masks or videos of a person. Level C represents silicon masks, as well as high-quality videos of a person presented on a high-resolution display, for instance. Each of these attack examples is called a <b>presentation attack instrument (PAI)</b>. The testing is made with classes of attacks, the so called PAI species. Such a PAI species can be an iPhone 8 display presenting photos of various people. Another example of a PAI species are photos of different people printed on the same paper with the same printer. PAD evaluations can be made for each of the levels A-C separately. For a FIDO certification, an algorithm needs to detect spoofing attempts on levels A and B by default.</p>
<p><b>How Presentation Attack Detection Performance is Measured</b></p>
<p>For a certified liveness detection, certain values are calculated to assess the performance: <b>APCER</b> (Attack Presentation Classification Error Rate) and <b>BPCER</b> (Bona-fide Presentation Classification Error Rate). APCER calculates the proportion of attacks mistakenly being classified as live persons. BPCER represents the proportion of live persons (also called Bona-fide) being classified as fakes. For mere PAD evaluation, no verification performance takes place. It is only tested whether a presented face came from a live person or not. For a full FIDO certification, the value calculated also includes the verification (facial recognition) result, resulting in <b>IAPMR</b> (Impostor Attack Presentation Match Rate). This number describes the proportion of attacks by impostors incorrectly accepted as the real person.</p>
<p>For receiving a certified liveness detection included in a FIDO certification, 10 presentation attack species (6 from level A and 4 from level B, see table 1) as well as 10 people (subjects) are needed. This results in 100 PAI. Each has a maximum of 5 attempts to spoof the liveness detection. In other words, 50 attempts per species, or 500 spoofing attempts are used altogether. In order to successfully complete this part of the performance testing, the IAPMR needs to be less than 20 % per PAI species, meaning less than 10 of the 50 attempts per species may wrongly be classified as a live person. For more details please see <a href="https://fidoalliance.org/specs/biometric/requirements/#PADCriteria" class="bbcode_url" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external" rel="nofollow">FIDO’s PAD criteria</a>. In order to provide the desired objective performance measurement, liveness detection certifications that are not part of a FIDO certification process should be designed similarly.</p>
<p><b>Limitations of Liveness Detection Certifications</b></p>
<p>As implied above, there are certain limitations of liveness detection certifications, which should be kept in mind when using them as decision criterion. For instance, for a PAD evaluation that is independent from FIDO, the vendor himself can choose and decide the level of PAI, the number of attacks and the number of subjects. Also, the test devices can be chosen by the vendor, even for FIDO certifications. Even for a strongly regulated FIDO certification, the number of devices and spoofing scenarios tested is limited. This should be kept in mind as the biometric anti-spoofing can perform differently on unseen presentation attacks. Also, when reviewing the test reports of evaluated/certified solutions, there are details which should be looked at closely, for instance, the false rejection of live people (BPCER). This calculation is often kept unmentioned as there is a direct link between APCER and BPCER: if the solution is designed to perform extremely well on APCER (correctly rejecting fakes), this can result in a higher BPCER (falsely rejecting live people). In a real-world scenario, of course, this has to be balanced in order to create security and usability at the same time. <p><b>Certified Liveness Detection in Context</b></p>
