Nach drei erfolgreichen Messetagen endet die LogiMAT 2024, internationale Fachmesse für Intralogistik-Lösungen und Prozessmanagement, mit Zuwächsen und Spitzenwerten in allen messerelevanten Kennzahlen. Insgesamt kamen 67.420 Fachbesucher (+ 8,1 %) auf das Stuttgarter Messegelände. 1.610 Aussteller (+ 6 %) präsentierten neueste Lösungen und Produktentwicklungen und unter anderem mehr als 120 innovative Produktpremieren. Zudem konnte die Nettoausstellungsfläche um noch einmal 2.000 zusätzliche Quadratmeter auf gut 67.000 Quadratmeter gesteigert werden. Insgesamt befanden sich an den drei Messetagen 101.649 Personen (Fachbesucher, Aussteller, Medienvertreter) auf dem Messegelände. „Damit setzt die LogiMAT ihre Erfolgsgeschichte weiter fort“, urteilt Messeleiter Michael Ruchty vom Münchener Messeveranstalter EUROEXPO Messe- und Kongress-GmbH. „Auch in diesem Jahr haben wir wieder gezeigt, dass mit Kreativität auch unter dem gegebenen Platzangebot noch weitere Flächen zu erschließen sind und innovative Neuerungen eingebunden werden können, dass mit Kreativität auch unter dem gegebenen Platzangebot noch weitere Flächen zu erschließen sind und innovative Neuerungen eingebunden werden können. Die zehn Messehallen des Stuttgarter Messegeländes waren bereits frühzeitig komplett ausgebucht. Auf den verfügbaren 125.000 Quadratmetern Bruttoausstellungsfläche stellten weltweit führende Produkthersteller, Systementwickler, -integratoren und Dienstleister aus 40 Ländern ihre jüngsten Neuentwicklungen und Lösungen für effiziente Prozesse in der Intralogistik vor. Rund 150 Unternehmen waren erstmals auf der LogiMAT vertreten. Bei einer Quote von 35 Prozent kam in diesem Jahr zudem jeder dritte Aussteller aus dem Ausland – 86 davon aus Übersee, China, Nordamerika und Australien. „Die LogiMAT in Stuttgart hat sich international den Ruf als bedeutendste Präsentationsplattform und Arbeitsmesse der Intralogistikbranche erarbeitet und gilt als weltweit führende Intralogistikmesse“, unterstreicht Messeleiter Ruchty. „Die Aussteller aus dem In- und Ausland goutieren den Standort Stuttgart im Zentrum Europas mit der direkten Anbindung des Messegeländes an Flughafen, Straße und bald auch den Schienenfernverkehr.“

Gleiches gilt für das Fachpublikum, das mit einer Quote von 98,8 Prozent den Besucherstrom dominierte. Die Zahlen zum aktuellen Messegeschehen wurden vom unabhängigen Baseler Marktforschungsinstitut Wissler & Partner ermittelt und dokumentiert. Danach hatten 41 Prozent des Fachpublikums einen Anreiseweg von mehr als 300 Kilometer. Jeder vierte Messebesucher kam aus dem Ausland nach Stuttgart – davon mehr als die Hälfte aus Asien, Afrika und Amerika.

Nach Branchen aufgeschlüsselt sind 52 Prozent der Fachbesucher der Industrie sowie 16 Prozent dem Groß- und Einzelhandel zuzuordnen. Das Gros des Fachpublikums (57 %) war als Entscheider vor Ort, um sich ein Bild von den aktuellen Lösungsangeboten für die Intralogistik zu machen und die Angebote direkt miteinander zu vergleichen. 38 Prozent der Besucher hatten konkrete Investitionsvorhaben im Gepäck. Gut 24 Prozent der Fachbesucher erteilten auf der Messe einen Zuschlag oder werden Aufträge unmittelbar nach der Messe vergeben.

Die nächste LogiMAT ist die „LogiMAT China“, die bereits vom 8. bis 10. Mai 2024 in Shenzhen veranstaltet wird. Vom 16. bis 18. Oktober 2024 öffnet die „LogiMAT Southeast Asia“ in Bangkok ihre Tore und vom 13. bis 15. Februar 2025 wird die LogiMAT India in Mumbai veranstaltet. Die kommende LogiMAT in Stuttgart findet vom 11. bis 13. März 2025 statt.

Die ausgezeichneten Unternehmen leisten mit ihren Produkten einen Beitrag zu sicheren Prozessen, zur flexiblen Anpassung bei Veränderungen sowie zur Effizienzverbesserung und somit letztlich zur Steigerung der Produktivität in der Logistik. Vergeben wurde der Preis „BESTES PRODUKT“ im Rahmen der feierlichen Eröffnung in der LogiMAT Arena am Vormittag des ersten Messetages. Die Laudatio hielt Prof. Dr.-Ing. Johannes Fottner, Ordinarius des Lehrstuhls für Fördertechnik Materialfluss Logistik der Technischen Universität München.

In der Kategorie „Kommissionier-, Förder-, Hebe-, Lagertechnik“ ging der Preis an das slowakische Unternehmen Brightpick / Photoneo s.r.o. (Halle 6, Stand 6F64 und Eingang Ost, Stand EO41) für den Brightpick Autopicker

Der Brightpick Autopicker ist der weltweit erste autonome mobile Kommissionierroboter für die Auftragsabwicklung, der Aufträge direkt in den Lagergängen kommissionieren und konsolidieren kann. Dabei reicht die Bandbreite von ungekühlten und gekühlten Lebensmitteln bis hin zu Arzneimitteln, medizinischen Geräten, verpackten Waren, Kosmetika, Elektronik, Kleidung in Polybeuteln und mehr.

Der Autopicker hat ein patentiertes Design mit zwei Behälterplätzen. Dadurch kann er Lagerbehälter aus dem Regal nehmen und einzelne Artikel daraus in einen benachbarten Auftragsbehälter geben, der sich am Roboter befindet. Er tut dies wiederholt, während er sich durch das Lager bewegt, bis der Auftrag oder die Charge vollständig kommissioniert wurde.

Im Gegensatz zu anderen Fulfillment-Robotern muss der Brightpick Autopicker zentrale Kommissionierstationen erst anfahren, wenn die Kommissionierung abgeschlossen ist. Das bedeutet eine schnellere Kommissionierung und einen höheren Durchsatz. Neben der robotergestützten Zusammenstellung von Auftragsposten im Kommissioniergang kann der AMR auch für schwere oder schwer zu kommissionierende Artikel der Ware-zur-Person-Kommissionierung, zur Palettenkommissionierung und Bestandsauffüllung, für dynamisches Slotting sowie für Pufferung und Versand eingesetzt werden.

Der Roboter arbeitet mit Standardregalen und -behältern. Das ermöglicht einen schnellen Einsatz und eine einfache Integration in jede Lagerumgebung – einschließlich bestehender Abläufe und Zwischengeschosse. Der AMR ist innerhalb weniger Wochen einsatzbereit, reduziert die Kommissionierarbeit um 98 % und halbieren damit die entsprechenden Logistikkosten. Außerdem garantiert der Einsatz des Brightpick Autopickers bzw. einer solchen AMR-Flotte im Lager eine 100-prozentige Kommissionierzuverlässigkeit.

In der Kategorie „Identifikation, Verpackungs- und Verladetechnik, Ladungssicherung“ ging der Preis an das Unternehmen CMC Packaging Automation S.p.A (Eingang Ost, Stand ES55) aus Italien. Ausgezeichnet wurde die Maschine CMC CartonWrap DUO

CMC CartonWrap Duo ist die erste auf dem Markt erhältliche Maschine, die im selben Arbeitsablauf sowohl formatgerechte Kartons, als auch Umschläge entsprechend den Abmaßen der zu verpackenden Artikeln herstellen kann. Dies reduziert das Verpackungsvolumen, den Kartonabfall und die CO2-Emissionen von Transporten erheblich. Das bahnbrechende Konzept verbindet Nachhaltigkeit und Effizienz auf harmonische Weise. Denn es reduziert den Verbrauch von Wellpappe im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Technologien um bis zu 50 % und benötigt bis zu 70 % weniger Klebstoff. Darüber hinaus werden Kundenerlebnis und -zufriedenheit verbessert, weil maßgeschneiderte Verpackungen mehr Sicherheit beim Transport bieten. Mit Packvertizing im CMC CartonWrap DUO lassen die individualisierten Verpackungen sich zudem ansprechend farbig bedrucken und produzieren.

Der Prozess beginnt mit dem Scannen des zu verpackenden Artikels unter Einsatz innovativer Scantechnologie. Auf der Grundlage der ermittelten Maße entwirft und erstellt die Maschine aus einer Endlosrolle Wellpappe eine Schachtel oder für dünnere Artikel einen Umschlag in Sondergröße. Sie schneidet, faltet und versiegelt die Pappe, um die gewünschte Form zu erhalten. Sobald die Schachtel bzw. der Umschlag geformt ist, wird der Artikel vorsichtig hineingelegt. Die Maschine sorgt dabei für einen passgenauen Sitz, um Bewegungen und mögliche Schäden während des Transports zu minimieren. Danach trägt sie den Klebstoff auf, um die Verpackungslaschen zu befestigen. Auf diese Weise entsteht eine vollständig geschlossene und gut versiegelte Verpackung. Last but not least wird automatisiert ein Versandetikett aufgeklebt und das Paket zur Identifizierung bedruckt. Das fertige Paket steht dann für Sortierung und Versand bereitet.

In der Kategorie „Software, Kommunikation, IT“ ging der Preis an das deutsche Unternehmen Logistics Reply GmbH (Halle 8, Stand 8F37) für die erste bidirektionale Open AI-Sprachsteuerung für Warehouse Management Systeme LEApedia

Die KI-Anwendung ist eine bidirektionale Open AI-Sprachsteuerung für Warehouse Management Systeme. Der intelligente Chatbot reagiert auf Befehle und Fragen in natürlicher Sprache. Die Anwendung ist als Modul LEApedia in die Cloud-native SaaS-WMS-Lösung LEA ReplyTM integriert. Über die intelligente Suchfunktion können Benutzer mit natürlicher Spracheingabe beispielweise nach Begrifflichkeiten oder Prozessbeschreibungen suchen, um sich im System leichter und schneller zurechtzufinden.

Das Modul lässt sich in kürzester Zeit integrieren und bei laufendem Betrieb spezifisch auf die jeweiligen Kundenanforderungen und Softwareumgebungen zuschneiden. Der intelligente Chatbot LEApedia bietet den Mitarbeitern die Möglichkeit, sofort Antworten auf Fragen zu Prozessen, Fachterminologien, Systemkonfigurationen und mehr zu erhalten. Sie verlieren dadurch keine Zeit mit manueller Suche, sondern erhalten die benötigten Informationen unverzüglich auf einen Blick. Die präzisen und konsistenten Ergebnissen reduzieren potenzielle menschliche Fehler deutlich.

Ein weiterer Vorteil: Das Programm erkennt nicht nur Eingabefragen in natürlicher Sprache; es antwortet auch in natürlicher Sprache und verzichtet auf Fachchinesisch. The Brightpick Autopicker is the only autonomous mobile fulfillment robot in the world that can pick and consolidate orders directly in warehouse aisles, capable of handling everything from non-refrigerated and refrigerated foods to pharmaceuticals, medical devices, packaged goods, cosmetics, electronics, clothing in polybags, and more. The Autopicker’s patented design features two bin locations so that the robot can remove one storage bin from a shelf and place individual items from it into an adjacent bin attached to the robot. It does this repeatedly as it moves through the warehouse until the order or batch has been fully picked.

This yields dramatic reductions in packaging volume, cardboard waste, and greenhouse gas emissions. The revolutionary design is a harmonious combination of sustainability and efficiency, using up to 50% less corrugated cardboard and 70% less adhesive than existing technologies. It also enhances the customer experience, because custom packaging is more reliable during transport. With CMC PackVertizing, you can even produce colorful, appealing custom packaging.

The machine first uses state-of-the-art technology to scan the items to be packed and identify their dimensions, then designs and produces a box from a continuous roll of corrugated cardboard or a custom-sized envelope for thinner items. It cuts, folds, and seals the cardboard to obtain the desired shape. The industry for automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) cannot complain about a lack of orders at the moment. The latest trend barometer from global industry alliance AIM shows that some 80 percent of AIDC companies surveyed anticipate a relatively stable market, with business at least holding steady or even improving. The broad range of technologies and materials used in AIDC make it an enabler for the automation and digitization of production, retail, and logistics processes—and this in turn is fueling strong demand. The spectrum extends from traditional optical readable media (ORM) with barcode, QR code, 2D code, and 3D code to radio frequency identification (RFID), vision systems, sensor technology, real-time location systems (RTLS), Bluetooth, and near-field communication (NFC). Key solutions for intralogistics include systems for generating and printing labels, capturing data, and tracking and locating inventory. The focus in new product development is currently on achieving a smooth interaction of various technologies to further streamline the digital supply chain. “The issue of sustainability stands out as another clear trend,” notes Exhibition Director Ruchty from Munich-based event organizer EUROEXPO Messe- und Kongress-GmbH. “Sustainability, along with security, will be key driver of future development in AIDC, and this is clearly evident in the products and solutions that industry exhibitors are bringing to LogiMAT 2024.”

The AIDC industry integrates adjacent technologies such as image capture and sensor technology and offers cloud-based labeling systems, new and recycled material combinations, and reusable labels and RFID tags. Customers and anyone else at LogiMAT 2024 with an interest in AIDC technology will find a central hub in Hall 2, where specialized providers will showcase the latest identification, RFID, data capture, and sensor solutions that reflect the many facets of the industry today.

Transponders printed directly onto liner

Labeling innovations will include holographic security products and newly developed smart RFID labels with plastic-free, recyclable laser-cut antennas. New battery-free smart labels with an e-paper display offer more data volume on the label. Visitors can also learn about special materials that make labels particularly resistant or boast innovative features for optimum handling. RFID and NFC inlays are entering the label printing market, enabling innovative label composition by printing transponders directly onto the liner. Direct labeling of products and packaging also helps avoid the use of plastics and chemicals. Among the solutions for such applications on display at LogiMAT, visitors can experience a new printer with an integrated barcode reader and an e-paper solution that converts PDFs or IGP print data to standard e-paper, replacing the printing process in traditional label printing. A new RFID label solution for comprehensive bulk data capture and seamless batch tracking of containers will also be presented. Another novelty is a cloud labeling solution that makes it possible to seamlessly implement, manage, and scale customizable labeling across global networks.

After automatic identification, the second part of AIDC is about data capture, of course—a field where providers are looking to streamline and automate workflows. Examples include a new scan-free identification solution and a modular scanning gate with optional add-ons for contour and volume control, pallet identification, counting process optimization, and more. The wearables for data capture in industry, logistics, and retail will include new multi-range scanners with a flexible range of 10 to 250 centimeters.

New products and upgrades of existing products will also be presented for indoor tracking, goods tracking, and location. Visitors can watch a live demo of a real-time location system that uses Bluetooth Low Energy to track unit load devices, goods, industrial trucks, and more. A new mini-kit will also be presented, a modular all-in-one system that uses ultrasound to determine the precise indoor position of objects and people. The plug-and-play system consists of at least three tags and a base station and is designed to enable the positioning of several moving targets via ultrasonic signals with an accuracy down to 10 cm.

AIDC in the LogiMAT accompanying program

Besides the product exhibits and the Exhibitor Insights, presentations in which exhibitors introduce and explain their products and solutions, the accompanying program of LogiMAT 2024 also offers deep dives into top AIDC topics. The popular Tracking & Tracing Theatre in Hall 2 (Booth 2B07) brings together a consortium of AIM members and partners for live scenarios focusing on the digital supply chain. Für die Interessenten und Kunden der Branche wird auf der LogiMAT 2024 die Halle 2 zum zentralen Anlaufpunkt. Transponder direkt aufs Trägerpapier gedruckt

Bei den Etiketten werden unter anderem holographische Sicherheitsprodukte und neuentwickelte smarte RFID-Etiketten mit plastikfreien, recycelbaren laser-geschnittenen Antennen gezeigt. Für mehr Datenvolumen auf dem Etikett gibt es neue batterielose Smart Labels mit ePaper-Display. Zudem werden Spezialmaterialien vorgestellt, die Label besonders widerstandsfähig machen oder innovative Features für eine optimale Handhabung besitzen. Im Rahmen des Etikettendrucks kommen RFID- und NFC-Inlays auf den Markt, die eine innovative Etikettenzusammensetzung ermöglichen, indem die Transponder direkt auf Trägerpapier gedruckt werden. Entsprechende Vermeidung von Kunststoffen und Chemikalien erzielt zudem Direktbeschriftung von Produkten und Verpackungen. Für derartige Anwendungen werden unter anderem ein neuer Drucker mit integriertem Barcodereader sowie eine ePaper-Lösung vorgestellt, die PDFs oder IGP-Druckdaten kompatibel zu Standard ePapern konvertiert und damit den Druckvorgang im klassischen Etikettendruck ersetzt. Überdies wird unter anderem eine neue RFID-Labellösung für umfassende Pulkerfassung und lückenlose Chargenrückverfolgung von Behältern präsentiert. Weiteres Novum ist eine Cloud-Labeling-Lösung, mit der individualisierbare Etikettierung nahtlos über globale Netzwerke hinweg zu implementieren, zu verwalten und zu skalieren möglich ist.

Zweites Standbein der AutoID ist neben der Kennzeichnung die Datenerfassung. In diesem Bereich zielen die Anbieter darauf ab, die Prozesse zu automatisieren und zu vereinfachen. Etwa mit einer neuen scanfreien Identifikationslösung oder einem modular konzipierten Erfassungsgate, dessen Add-Ons einzeln kombinierbar sind und unter anderem Konturen- und Volumenkontrolle, Palettenidentifikation und Zählprozessoptimierung bieten. Bei den Wearables zur Datenerfassung in Industrie, Logistik und Handel sind unter anderem neue Multi-Range-Scanner mit einer flexiblen Reichweite von 10 bis 250 Zentimetern zu sehen.

Neu- und Weiterentwicklung werden zudem für Indoor-Tracking, Warenverfolgung und Positionsbestimmungen vorgestellt. In einer Live-Vorführung können die Fachbesucher anhand eines RTLS die Echtzeitlokalisierung mit Hilfe von BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) erleben. Die Technik dient als Lösung für die systemische Positionsabbildung etwa von Ladungsträgern, Ware und Flurförderfahrzeugen. Mit einem neuen Minikit wird überdies ein modulares Komplettsystem zur präzisen Indoor-Positionsbestimmung von Objekten und Personen mittels Ultraschall gezeigt. Das Plug-and-Play-System besteht aus mindestens drei Tags und einer Basisstation und soll via Ultraschallsignalen die Positionierung mehrerer beweglicher Ziele auf bis zu 10 cm genau ermöglichen.

AutoID im Rahmenprogramm der LogiMAT

Neben den Produktvorstellungen und den Exhibitor Insights, in denen Aussteller eigene Produkte und Lösungen erläutern, werden aktuelle AutoID-Themen im informativen messebegleitenden Rahmenprogramm der LogiMAT vertieft. Das gilt zum einen für das bewährte Tracking & Tracing Theatre (T&TT) in Halle 2 (Stand 2B07). Dort rückt ein Firmenkonsortium aus AIM-Mitgliedern und AIM-Partnern in Live-Szenarien die Digitalisierung der Supply Chain in den Mittelpunkt. Darüber hinaus befassen sich zwei Expert Forums im Atrium Eingang Ost als zentralen Veranstaltungsort der LogiMAT explizit mit AutoID-Themen. Smart solutions for the needs of today’s distribution logistics: That’s what manufacturers in the packaging and packaging machinery sector will be showcasing with their latest product innovations for efficient, sustainable shipping at LogiMAT 2024, whose theme this year is “SHAPING CHANGE TOGETHER: Sustainability – AI – Ergonomics.” Most exhibitors will continue to focus on outer packaging for small parts and single-item packages. Individualized packaging and the customization of packaging systems also remain a dominant trend. Sustainability is yet another high priority in product development, reflecting current market demand. The areas where sustainability is particularly prominent in the innovations coming to LogiMAT include protective and filling materials, outer packaging, unit load devices, and systems for reuse and recycling. “Sustainability with a high volume of e-commerce means avoiding plastic wherever possible, selecting appropriate package sizes that minimize unused volume, and using packaging material that can be easily recycled,” notes LogiMAT Exhibition Director Michael Ruchty of Munich-based event organizer EUROEXPO Messe- und Kongress-GmbH. “Manufacturers, retailers, and service providers must be ready to respond to pressure from customers on this point and integrate new solutions into their distribution processes. The international exhibitors at LogiMAT in Hall 4 of the Messe Stuttgart convention center will offer a comprehensive overview of available options.”

Packaging solution with industrial sewing machine

Visitors get their first taste of the broad spectrum of solutions as soon as they step into the East Entrance, where several packaging manufacturers and packaging technology companies are exhibiting. It begins with a customized industrial wood packaging solution that allows enterprise customers with volumes starting at about 500 crates a month to control production and delivery themselves through a direct IT interface with the manufacturer. Another exhibitor will be presenting new packaging solutions made of honeycomb cardboard. A semi-automated packaging machine for shipping in standard paper bags will also be put forward as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plastic film packaging. The machine can work with various paper qualities to create branded bags in sizes customized to the content. The bags are prepared, automatically labeled, and automatically opened and closed in a coordinated process before an industrial sewing machine seals the envelope automatically.

Exhibitors in Hall 4 will be presenting new developments in areas such as the traditional container—the unit load device often at the heart of reuse cycles. A compact new intralogistics container combines the design advantages of a rigid mini-load container with the logistical benefits of a collapsible container. The container series was specially developed for use in automated small parts warehouses and shuttle systems. What makes it unique is that the volume of the container can be reduced by 70 percent to save space during storage and transport. When used in automated small parts warehouses, the compressed container is automatically erected and becomes a rigid mini-load container. Another container innovation presented in Hall 4 is a reusable, repairable, and ultimately recyclable mobile transport system. The reusable container consists of at least 70 percent recycled plastic and is intended to replace traditional pallet solutions as well as conventional mesh boxes and disposable packaging made of cardboard or film. Also in Hall 4: a new dolly base for the storage and transport of segregated goods in various container types, for loose goods in sleeve packs, and for mixed goods. The deadweight and footprint of the roller container system, designed for goods of various types within a supply chain, make it a viable choice for all vehicle types, even smaller sprinter vans.

Modular combination machines with case erector and sealer

The packaging machines on display will also feature distinctive innovations. This includes a filling and sealing machine for e-commerce applications with integrated label print dispensers for separate labels or thermal transfer printers for direct printing on the bag, capable of processing up to 100 pouch packs per hour. The bag length can be perfectly customized to the contents so that no material is wasted. The machine is able to process tubular film, bags from the roll, and paper. Another packaging machine to be exhibited combines a multi-size case erector and a case sealer with a height reduction feature. The two devices can be used as standalone modules or deployed as a single packing station. Sustainable, water-activated adhesive tape technology is offered as a sealing strip. Hall 4 will also feature a live demonstration of a complete operational process set-up for a new automated, made-to-measure packaging solution. With a throughput of 600 parcels per hour, the system is designed to provide a dimensionally accurate, erected carton every six seconds, with the underside pre-glued.

Other innovations on display feature the use of hot-melt adhesive solutions. Hot-melts are typically used to create boxes and envelopes customized to the precise dimensions of the contents, but other applications include stacked goods transported on pallets, which the manufacturer claims hot-melts can stabilize without the use of plastic film. The filling materials include several alternatives to plastic air cushions, expanded polystyrene flakes, or crumpled paper—including various sustainable cushions made from recycled cardboard. Large companies can even order the machines directly to produce the packaging cushions themselves. Several manufacturers will also be presenting innovative, sustainable bubble wrap made from up to 100 percent recycled paper.

Those attending the Expert Forum in the East Entrance Atrium on the first day of LogiMAT 2024, part of the event’s accompanying program, will enjoy a sneak peek into the future of packaging and shipping. Sandra Lehmann, editor at the trade journal Logistik Heute, moderates a discussion entitled “Smart packaging: packages that think outside the box.” “With the latest packaging solutions on display at LogiMAT 2024, industry exhibitors are showcasing their role as major innovators on the road to greater sustainability and efficiency in shipping,” concludes Exhibition Director Ruchty. “This year’s LogiMAT will once again offer industry professionals from around the world a wide range of inspiring solutions for sustainable investments in packaging."

Bei den Neuvorstellungen auf der LogiMAT umfassen die Nachhaltigkeitsaspekte insbesondere die verwendeten Werkstoffe für Schutz- und Füllmaterial, Umverpackungen und Ladungsträger sowie die Einrichtung von (Mehrweg-)Kreislaufsystemen. „Nachhaltigkeit bei starkem Versandhandelsaufkommen fordert soweit wie möglich den Verzicht auf Plastik, angemessene Paketgrößen mit möglichst wenig ungenutztem Volumen und Verpackungsmaterial, das sich gut recyceln lässt“, fasst LogiMAT-Messeleiter Michael Ruchty vom Münchener Messeveranstalter EUROEXPO Messe- und Kongress-GmbH zusammen. „Produzenten, Handel und Dienstleister müssen sich auf entsprechenden Druck ihrer Kunden einstellen und neue Lösungen in ihre Versandfertigungsprozesse integrieren. Über die dafür gebotenen Optionen zeigen die internationalen Aussteller auf der LogiMAT in Halle 4 einen umfassenden Überblick.“

Verpackungslösung mit Systemnähmaschine

Bereits im Bereich Eingang Ost zeigen mehrere Aussteller mit Ihren Exponaten das breite Spektrum der Lösungsoptionen auf, dass die Verpackungshersteller und Unternehmen der Verpackungstechnik bieten. Das beginnt bei industriell gefertigten, maßgeschneiderten Industrieverpackungen aus Holz für internationale Großkunden. Mit einem Bedarf ab rund 500 Kisten pro Monat können sie mit direkter IT-Anbindung an den Hersteller die Produktion und Anlieferung der Industrieverpackungen selbst steuern. Ein weiterer Aussteller präsentiert dort neue Verpackungslösungen aus Wabenpappe. Daneben wird als umweltfreundliche Alternative zur üblichen Folienverpackung eine semiautomatische Verpackungsmaschine für den Versand in Standard-Papiertüten vorgestellt. Die Verpackungsmaschine verarbeitet individuelle Tütengrößen, Markentüten und verschiedene Papierqualitäten. Bereitstellung der Tüten, automatische Adressetikettierung und das automatische Öffnen beziehungsweise Verschließen der Tüte erfolgen in einem koordinierten Prozess. Eine Systemnähmaschine verschließt den Umschlag automatisch.

Von den Ausstellern in Halle 4 werden Neuentwicklungen unter anderem im Bereich des klassischen Ladungsträgers, dem Behälter vorgestellt, der vielfach die Basis für Mehrwegkreisläufe bildet. Ein neuer, komprimierter Intralogistikbehälter vereint die konstruktiven Vorzüge eines starren AKL-Behälters mit den logistischen Vorteilen eines klappbaren Behälters. Die Behälterserie wurde speziell für den Einsatz im AKL und in Shuttlesystemen entwickelt. Besonderheit: Das Volumen des Behälters soll sich um 70 Prozent reduzieren lassen, um diesen platzsparend zu lagern und zu transportieren. Für den Einsatz im AKL wird der komprimierte Behälter vollautomatisch aufgerichtet und zum starren AKL-Behälter. Als weitere Neuheit wird in Halle 4 ein wiederverwendbares, reparierbares und schließlich recyclebares Mobiles Transport System (MTS) präsentiert. Der Mehrweg-Behälter besteht zu mindestens 70 Prozent aus wiederaufbereiteten Kunststoffen und soll klassische Palettenlösungen sowie konventionelle Gitterboxen und Einwegverpackungen aus Karton oder Folie ersetzen. Für Lagerung und Transport getrennter Güter in verschiedenen Containertypen, für lose Güter in einem Schüttgut-Sleeve und für gemischte Güter wird in Halle 4 zudem eine neue Dolly-Basis gezeigt. Das Rollcontainersystem ist auf Waren unterschiedlicher Beschaffenheit innerhalb einer Lieferkette ausgerichtet. Dabei sollen Eigengewicht und die Stellfläche des Ladungsträgers einen Einsatz in allen Fahrzeugtypen, selbst in kleineren Sprinter-Transportern ermöglichen.

Modulare Kombi-Maschinen mit Kartonaufrichter und -verschließer

Markante Neuentwicklungen sind zudem bei den Verpackungsmaschinen zu entdecken. So wird eine Füll- und Verschließmaschine für E-Commerce-Anwendungen ausgestellt, die bis zu 100 Beutelpackungen pro Stunde verarbeitet. Etikettendruckspender für separate Etiketten oder Thermotransferdrucker für einen direkten Druck auf den Beutel sind in die Maschine integriert. Die Beutellänge kann individuell an die zu verpackenden Produkte angepasst werden, um mit perfekter Größe kein Material zu verschwenden. Als Verpackungsmaterial kann die Maschine Schlauchfolie, Beutel von der Rolle und Papier verarbeiten. Eine weitere ausgestellte Verpackungsmaschine kombiniert einen Mehrgrößen-Kartonaufrichter und einen Kartonverschließer mit Höhenreduktion. Beide Module können als Stande-alone oder als einheitliche Verpackungsstation eingesetzt werden. Als Verschlussstreifen wird eine nachhaltige, wasseraktivierte Klebebandtechnologie angeboten. Darüber hinaus wird in Halle 4 in der Live-Demonstration eines kompletten operativen Prozessaufbaus eine neue automatisierte, auf Maß produzierende Verpackungslösung gezeigt. Mit einem Durchsatz von 600 Paketen pro Stunde soll das System alle sechs Sekunden einen jeweils maßgerechten, aufgestellten und auf der Unterseite bereits verklebten Karton bereitstellen.

Weitere Innovationen zeigen unter anderem den Einsatz von Schmelzklebstofflösungen, sogenannten Hotmelts. Sie werden für maßgeschneiderte Kartons und Umschläge vorgestellt, die exakt auf die zu verpackenden Produkte abgestimmt sind. Ein weiteres Einsatzgebiet sind gestapelte Waren beim Transport auf Paletten, die laut Hersteller per Hotmelts ohne Kunststofffolien stabilisiert werden können. Bei den Füllmaterialien gibt es mehrere Alternativen zu Kunststoff-Luftpolstern, Flocken aus expandiertem Polystyrol oder etwa Knüllpapier zu entdecken. So werden verschiedene nachhaltige Polsterkissen aus Altkartons vorgestellt. Großkunden können gleich auch die Maschinen zur Eigenproduktion der Verpackungspolster ordern. Überdies präsentieren mehrere Hersteller neuartige, nachhaltige Luftpolsterfolie aus bis zu 100 Prozent recyceltem Papier.

Einen Blick in die Zukunft von Verpackung und Versand wagen im messebegleitenden Rahmenprogramm der LogiMAT 2024 am ersten Messetag die Teilnehmer eines Expert Forums im Atrium Eingang Ost. Unter der Moderation von Sandra Lehmann, Redakteurin der Fachzeitschrift Logistik Heute, steht dort das Thema „Digitale Verpackung: Wenn das Paket mitdenkt“ auf der Agenda. „Mit den auf der LogiMAT 2024 vorgestellten aktuellen Verpackungslösungen erweisen sich die Aussteller als maßgebliche Wegbereiter für mehr Nachhaltigkeit und Effizienz in der Versandfertigung“, resümiert Messeleiter Ruchty. „Damit bietet die LogiMAT dem internationalen Fachpublikum auch in diesem Jahr wieder vielfältige Inspirationen für zukunftsfähige Investitionen im Verpackungsbereich."

Manufacturers of material handling technology and intralogistics are showing strength in a difficult economic climate with a comprehensive range of products and services for efficient intralogistics. “Current conditions and the unrelenting pressure from digital transformation are fueling the sustained demand for automation solutions,” explains LogiMAT Exhibition Director Michael Ruchty from Munich-based event organizer EUROEXPO Messe- und Kongress-GmbH. “Many manufacturers and service providers are also adapting their intralogistics to the demands of multichannel operations. Achieving intralogistics processes of the necessary efficiency requires smart product innovations and automated warehouse solutions. The international exhibitors at LogiMAT 2024 in Stuttgart are showing what this can look like.”

The industry is continually integrating the latest technological developments such as robotics and sensor systems to create entirely new solutions while optimizing and extending the range of established technologies. Manufacturers of material handling and intralogistics systems, once again the largest exhibitor group at LogiMAT, are presenting a spectrum of solutions that reflects this diversity. Industry professionals can experience the latest innovations alongside optimizations of established material handling systems and equipment in Halls 1 (including the gallery), 3, 5, and 7 of the Messe Stuttgart convention center. Based on their inherent expertise in system control software, almost all leading system manufacturers are also expanding their software offerings as a standalone business segment. With the aim of offering end-to-end solutions, they have expanded in recent years beyond stationary conveyor systems, storage systems, and industrial robots to become increasingly involved in mobile conveyor systems, cobots, shuttles, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and automated guided vehicles (AGVs). The international material handling technology manufacturers and systems integrators will reflect these current industry trends in their exhibits at LogiMAT 2024.

Hardware, software, and AMRs from a single source

In Hall 5, a European systems integrator will be presenting components of a modular conveyor technology program—including a new A-frame and a goods-to-person picking solution for up to 500 picks per hour—while also highlighting the newest features and multivendor AMR integration capacities in their software suite. Meanwhile, in Hall 1, a hardware system developer will be showcasing a new warehouse lift, overhead conveyor technology, and various components such as mobile racking and channel storage shuttles for scalable intralogistics solutions, along with AMRs and new applications for the company’s warehouse management system (WMS). Over in Hall 3, another leading manufacturer is presenting a combination of new automation and robotics solutions, AI-based software, and people as technology partners for smart value chains.

Most exhibitors in the field of material handling and automation, however, are focusing on individual hardware components and systems in the traditional product range—for handling and storing pallets, for example. In Hall 7, industry professionals can have a look at a new heatable pallet magazine for extremely cold environments. The version with an additional fan heater has been developed for pallet handling in cold store environments down to -25°C degrees for easier operation in cold environments. Hall 7 will also host the world premiere of a unique fire prevention and protection system based on fuel cell technology. Low-oxygen exhaust air, which is produced during the energy conversion of hydrogen for green electricity and heat, ensures a reduced oxygen content in storage areas and also creates a permanent protective atmosphere.

In Hall 5, a new 2D pallet shuttle will be on display—an AMR-based storage and transport solution that transfers the shuttle technology already established in container and carton conveyor technology to pallet conveyor technology. Visitors there can also experience the first live exhibition of a piece-picking system, whose gantry robot uses suction cups instead of finger-shaped grippers to grip items more quickly and reliably. Hall 3 features an end-to-end system for automated storage and fast picking of long goods. The cassettes and shelves of the honeycomb storage system can be specially tailored to the dimensions of the material to be stored, maximizing storage density. To avoid empty runs, the integrated automated storage and retrieval systems can alternately pick up two cassettes, each weighing up to 1.5 tons, and move them to a height of up to 25 meters. Various carousel station solutions simplify the transfer of long goods and ensure a quick cassette change.

Scalable shuttle technology

Other new pallet solutions are on display in Hall 1, where several exhibitors are presenting new shuttle technology for the automated storage of standard and semi-pallets in high-bay warehouses. The new shuttle technology for standard pallets is designed to help improve storage density and operating speed, reduce manual workload, and lower operating costs in automated storage systems. The solution is scalable for various scenarios ranging from small, low-volume applications to extra-large, high-performance warehouses. A new semi-pallet shuttle, also presented in Hall 1, uses high-precision sensor technology to distinguish between plastic pallets of various colors and can be deployed in a wide range of temperatures and ambient conditions.

Even though e-commerce is currently lagging somewhat behind the peak volumes of previous years, several equipment manufacturers are continuing to focus on small parts and single items in their automated storage, picking, and conveying systems in everything from overhead conveyor technology to the integration of robotics. Several exhibitors are presenting innovations in the field of AutoStore systems, for example. In Hall 1, visitors can experience a new system robot with a lithium-titanium-oxide battery designed to accelerate charging and boost productivity up to 15 percent. A systems integrator will also be showcasing an extended product portfolio for enhancing small parts storage strategies on a project- and process-specific basis. Also on display: special transfer cells for transferring storage and retrieval processes from warehouse grids to material handling equipment or AGVs. Other options range from a robot picking solution to software with coordinated process control and individual prioritization strategies from the company’s own WMS.

Hall 1 will also feature a newly developed intralogistics tower with up to 1,000 container storage locations as a cost-effective entry-level automation solution. The tower consists of a static rack arranged around a rotating container lifter, the heart of the system. The solution, which allows storage of articles up to three deep and automated goods-to-person or bin-to-person picking, is designed for the needs of small companies that want to streamline their manual container storage systems. Hall 1 will also feature a new fully automated high-performance picking system for frozen goods down to -25°C designed to achieve throughput rates in both storage and retrieval of up to 12,000 packages per hour.

Overhead conveyor systems trending

Overhead conveyor technology, used in e-commerce and omnichannel business models to handle as many items as possible in the smallest possible space, will be among the dominant themes at LogiMAT 2024 in the alignment of warehouse processes, from automated storage and picking to the requirements of e-commerce. Hall 5 will host several exhibitors presenting new and improved designs in this product group. A new overhead conveyor technology including sorter pouches uses autonomous robots that move independently to their destination on a rail system with crossings, making the pouch sorter a game changer in e-commerce. The solution, exhibited for the first time anywhere in the world, offers maximum flexibility in system design and operation and can be scaled precisely to the customer’s evolving needs. Another novelty is an overhead conveyor system, designed as an alternative to totes, for product groups weighing up to 5 kg that easily become entangled or simply occupy too much space in totes. A second scalable bag sorter for sorting, sequencing, and intermediate buffering covers the maximum bag capacity of 7 kg, serving workstations with up to 10,000 bags per hour and a wide range of items, including clothing on hangers. Besides overhead conveyor sorters, exhibitors in Hall 5 will also present the latest developments in conventional sorter technology, including new loop sorters and innovations with a vision feature and package contour control designed to reduce sorting jams by 99.9 percent.

More innovations in diversified material handling hardware and process automation will be presented in nearly every hall of the Messe Stuttgart convention center. One focus here will be the linking of material handling equipment and technology with mobile transport devices such as cobots, AMRs, and AGVs. Hall 3, for example, will feature the live presentation of an end-to-end transfer station for loading and unloading AGVs designed to work with both containers and pallets. Hall 5 will feature an active loading and unloading system that allows either a standalone or integrated connection of AGV fleets to material handling systems.

It’s the age of analytics in factory and transport logistics! The software companies exhibiting at LogiMAT 2024 are departing from the trend of previous years to present products and solutions developed more for depth than breadth. They apparently consider their portfolio for the integration of enterprise software systems to be largely complete. LogiMAT 2024 will still include the latest developments on this front—including suites and app platforms with freely configurable modules for warehouse management systems (WMS) and transportation management systems (TMS), plus options for the direct control of intralogistics automation systems. But what’s really driving current trends in nearly all areas of intralogistics software right now is the integration of AI, which is opening up new horizons for tried-and-tested systems and their users. AI algorithms yield the potential to further automate processes and enhance efficiency through the advanced analysis of existing data. That’s because modern software systems act as central hubs that interconnect a wide variety of third-party systems, machines, and end devices with access to their performance data. They offer an overview of all relevant business processes and key performance indicators (KPIs). “Given all this, it’s only natural that developers would leverage today’s lightning-fast processing speeds and huge storage capacities and integrate specially programmed AI algorithms into their software for the purpose of analyzing data, enhancing visibility, and tapping into any potential gains,” remarks Exhibition Director Michael Ruchty from Munich-based event organizer EUROEXPO Messe- und Kongress-GmbH. “In Hall 8 at the Messe Stuttgart convention center, most of the software companies at this year’s LogiMAT will be focusing on the diverse palette of use cases available to their customers with their recently developed AI-based software solutions.”

Optimizing routes, inventory management, and demand forecasting

The complex, dynamic processes of modern logistics and intralogistics depend on smart software systems. Besides WMS and TMS, these systems include enterprise resource planning (ERP), materials management, and customer relationship management (CRM). The logistics industry generates huge volumes of data, and AI algorithms make it possible to very quickly obtain in-depth analytics of this data. They identify patterns and complex interdependencies in real time, delivering results that yield reliable information on route optimization, inventory management, or demand forecasting to empower sound strategic decision-making. Software with simulation scenarios supports needs-based equipment and material flow planning for logistics centers or location and network planning for an efficient supply chain. All of this is reflected in the improved systems, new applications, and automation options for smart data management under the theme “SHAPING CHANGE TOGETHER: Sustainability – AI – Ergonomics” at LogiMAT 2024.

Simulations, by running data analytics for the purpose of improving performance and optimizing the initial planning or expansion of intralogistics facilities even before they come online, offer a foundation to optimize the scaling of sites and shorten implementation times. Hall 8 brings together various exhibitors presenting the latest versions of systems, modules, and applications for simulations, virtual go-lives, and digital twins of production and logistics processes. These tools are also designed to identify and compare dynamic interactions of cross-enterprise changes in the supply chain, taking into account such key factors as inventories, transport times, and carbon footprint. Also on offer is an ERP system that consolidates all logistics-related enterprise data in a company-wide “single point of truth”: from procurement management and production logistics to storage, warehouse organization, distribution, and service. The aim is to analyze and evaluate enterprise data in its entirety, including cause-and-effect relationships, without any disruption in the digital exchange of data.

Accelerating picking processes by over 20% with AI analytics

The exhibits around warehouse management will include fully configurable systems, the latest cloud-based WMS versions with inventory reconciliation across multiple locations, direct warehouse technology control via forklift terminal without a backend or server, and a new type of warehouse control tower using real-time analytics to optimize and quickly adapt a WMS suite to evolving needs. A new AI-based IT platform will also be on display, designed to analyze WMS-driven logistics processes and boost the efficiency of picking processes by more than 20 percent.

Software companies are also confirming the trend toward the increased integration of generative AI and ChatGPT into real-world applications to digitize and automate more tasks and relieve human workers of routine activities. The intelligent chatbots are designed to make systems more user-friendly through personalized user experiences and intuitive interfaces. One exhibitor is integrating ChatGPT into the AI-based logistics platform so that requests for delivery status and product availability, which are formulated in natural language, can be filtered by top sellers and personalized warehouse reports can be generated. The AI uses interactive chat dialogs to support employees in the process. Another exhibitor will demonstrate how even users without a technical background can use ChatGPT to integrate business rules for internal process automation directly into a combined transport and document management system.

AI algorithms in a warehouse execution system help further integrate enterprise systems internally. A digital twin maps all warehouse movements in real time. Forklifts not only move goods, they also transmit their data. The integration of AI technologies makes it possible to distribute transport orders dynamically and optimize the overall performance of the warehouse. The warehouse execution system uses digital twin algorithms and real-time location data to coordinate manual and autonomous vehicles for greater efficiency and flexibility. Another innovation focuses on the AutoStore storage system: An AutoStore connector integrated into the warehouse management software receives transport orders from the WMS, splits them up, then passes them to the connected automated components. The connector coordinates the transports with an eye on capacities and while allowing for manual user interventions. Other software on display in Hall 8 include a newly developed system for efficient workflow management, a new module for assessing sustainability and easily creating rental models for your own unit load devices in software that automates load device booking and tracking, and a converter that automatically transforms outdated SAP applications into a modern, user-friendly app.

TMS and supply chain engineering

Beyond intralogistics, developers are relying on AI to design more resilient and efficient transports and supply channels and to support an integrated, collaborative, end-to-end supply chain with real-time performance data. TMS software is augmented to include document management so that freight documents can be efficiently scanned and securely digitized for quick access. KPI-driven scheduling management and route planning with cloud-based, graphical warehouse scans ensure precise handling of individually packaged goods. A new system integrating TMS software, telematics, and a driver app is designed to avoid unnecessary idle time and detours by integrating vehicle-, driver- and route-related information in real time. Another cloud-based TMS innovation for route optimization and planning uses AI to capture the specifications of human dispatchers, run planning ops in milliseconds, optimize the specifications, and store successful results in its memory for future calculations. Also on display will be the latest version of a fully cloud-based transport control center for automated route planning and more precise forecasting of estimated arrival times. The control center comes with an optional add-on dashboard module for transparent reporting.

Other innovations focus on AI-based supply chain engineering. Digital twins, for example, use AI algorithms to calculate optimum solutions in real time. A digital twin can figure out how to best cover a given delivery zone with the ideal collaboration of multiple distribution centers. The calculation can reflect any combination of orders on hand, weight, volumes, or quantities that the user specifies. An interactive scenario manager makes it easy to compare and evaluate all scenarios. Industry professionals will also be able to check out a cloud-based tool designed to increase supply chain visibility and improve supply chain management, collaboration, and communication. A supply chain network design tool supports users with supplier evaluations and sourcing strategies based on specific criteria. A predictive planning suite gives small and medium-sized enterprises a supply chain planning platform using AI and machine learning with new features for inventory management, demand and production planning, forecasting, and sales and operations planning. These enhancements are designed to optimize supply chain planning and control and provide precise forecasts of future inventory and material requirements.
