TÜV SÜD has been officially recognised as a certification body for CertifHyTM, the non-governmental certification scheme for promoting certified proof of origin for hydrogen throughout Europe. TÜV SÜD has been member of the CertifHyTM consortium from the outset and has contributed its extensive certification expertise to the development of the scheme.

CertifHy™ aims to facilitate and advance the production, procurement, and use of non-renewable, renewable and low-carbon hydrogen. It has developed the CertifHy™ non-governmental certification (NGC) scheme in Europe to support the growth of the hydrogen market by providing a reliable tool for consumers to track hydrogen’s origin and environmental credentials. The certificates facilitate the trade of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen throughout Europe.

TÜV SÜD is a global leader in testing, inspection and certification (TIC). More than 26,000 employees work at over 1,000 locations in about 50 countries to continually improve technology, systems and expertise. They contribute significantly to making technical innovations such as Industry 4.0, autonomous driving, renewable energy and hydrogen technologies safe and reliable.

TÜV SÜD has a long track record in hydrogen technology, applications and equipment. Over 500 experts oversee high availability and cutting-edge know-how. The TIC organisation’s comprehensive services include employee qualification and staff training, an extensive network of component testing and high-pressure laboratories, plant monitoring, H2 readiness checks and GreenHydrogen certification.

TÜV SÜD has been a member of the CertifHyTM consortium from its inception in 2014/2015. In the first phase of the project, the TÜV SÜD experts provided advice on the set-up of the non-governmental scheme. In phase two TÜV SÜD acted as certifier and delivered pilot certifications of five projects, and in the third phase TÜV SÜD offered training to other certification bodies interested in certifying and auditing CertifHyTM projects.
“We are convinced that CertifHyTM will play a critical role in the breakthrough of the hydrogen economy in Europe. TÜV SÜD has accompanied and driven the development of the CertifHyTM scheme from the very beginning. We developed our own standard for the certification of GreenHydrogen as early as 2011 in the form of CMS 70 which has provided us with an in-depth understanding of this specific market. We are all very pleased that we can now also support our customers with certification of proof of origin under CertifHyTM”, says Klaus Nürnberger, Head of the Certification Body “Climate and Energy”, TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH
