Nine Datwyler production sites already cover 100% of their electricity needs with renewable energy mostly generated from water, wind and photovoltaics, provided by their local electricity supplier. Furthermore, six production sites produce solar power for their own consumption. At the end of 2022, the share of electricity from renewable sources across all Datwyler plants was 36.6%. In this way, the company is actively supporting the United Nations‘ climate targets and making itself less dependent on the coal, oil and nuclear industries.

In 2021, Datwyler installed over 8,000 square meters of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of its Indian plant in Kesurdi. This alone will reduce the company’s CO2 emissions by more than 1,500 metric tons per year. In 2022, the company equipped five more production sites with photovoltaic systems: one plant in Switzerland, three in Italy and one in Germany. Datwyler now has a total of more than 19,000 square meters of photovoltaic panels, equivalent to around 2.5 soccer fields. Thanks to this capacity, the company expects to produce some 4,400 MWh (megawatt hours) of electricity annually for its own consumption. This is equivalent to the electricity consumption of more than 1,000 single-family homes in Europe with four residents each.

Target by 2030: to be climate-neutral at all sites.

Thanks to measures to improve energy efficiency and switch to renewable electricity, Datwyler’s relative CO2 emissions in 2022 were 4.7% lower than in 2021. Further sustainable projects, such as solar cells on the facade of the Swiss plant in Schattdorf with an output of around 350 MWh per year, are currently in the evaluation phase. The Xinhui and QSR sites, newly acquired in 2022, will also be integrated into Datwyler’s sustainability strategy and targets and are expected to increase their share of electricity from renewable sources over the next few years. By 2030, Datwyler aims to be climate neutral at all of its 27 production sites worldwide (Scope 1 + 2).
